Glorify God
1 Samuel 5:1-12
Introduction
The Israelites lost and the ark of the Lord was taken by the Philistines, but the Lord did not remain silent. There are several lessons that we can see in this story, namely the Ark of God is a symbol of God's own presence, God's hand is still mighty, even though His people are defeated because of their sins, God is still sovereign, glorify Him through the testimony of our lives.
Content
Firstly, the Ark of God is a symbol of God's own presence. The defeat of the Israelites made the Philistines think that Dagon was greater than God. The Bible clearly states that Dagon and the Philistines were not allowed by God to play with His glory. God also showed that Dagon was completely helpless. Twice Dagon was brought to his knees before the ark of God. No one is greater than God, never play with the glory of God.
Secondly, God's hand is still mighty, even though His people are defeated because of their sins. In battle, the Philistines may have defeated the Israelites but what is interesting here is that God does not let go of His people. God showed His might in an invisible way by making the Dagon fall and plagues for the nation where the ark was deposited. There was no god to help the Philistines, in fact, they were going to return the ark to Israel. God continues to reign powerfully, even though His people fall into sin and defeat.
Thirdly, God is still sovereign, glorify Him through the testimony of our lives. God reveals His omnipotence because Dagon is only a dead idol and has no power over God, and even must submit to worship God. Dagon was also proved unreliable by the Philistines when God inflicted ulcers on them. There is no power that can conquer God because essentially everything in this world is God's creation. God is mighty and has power over all things, glorify God through our lives.
Summary
The Ark of God was a curse on the Philistines. The Philistines brought the ark of God to Ashdod, placed it in the temple of Dagon. Dagon was crushed and beheaded, and the people of Ashdod were beaten with ulcers. God rebuked them in Gath when the ark was moved there; so, it was with the people of Ekron, when the ark was brought there. as we know that there are many things experienced by the philistines and even other nations where they entrusted the ark of God.
Our God is sovereign God, He has power over everything in the world. There is no power greater than His power. God is love; He also will not allow those who believe in Him to be destroyed by sin. Often, we lose because of our sins, but it does not reduce the power of God to help us.
POV
We see the beginning of the story is when the Israelites turned away from God by not listening to God so that they were defeated by the Philistines and the ark of God was taken. With the defeat of the Israelites, the Philistines thought that their god was more powerful than the God of Israel and we know with them that they brought the ark to the temple of Dagon because Dagon was their god. But what is interesting here is that God does not allow Himself to be mocked or humiliated. there are so many bad things received by the philistines and even other nations where they left the ark. they were no longer able to resist the power of God even their god lost and finally, they were afraid and then returned to the ark.
The lesson that I get from this story. God is love, no matter how big our sins, he still loves us. Whatever God allows may happen in this life, He is still in control, and of course, all that is to show that our God is a powerful God. Never underestimate God.
Conclusion
Everything that happens shows the glory of God. No one is greater than God, never play with the glory of God. God continues to reign powerfully, even though His people fall into sin and defeat. God is mighty and has power over all things, glorify God through our lives.
